This week, my husband, Trevor Fleck, reluctantly accepted my invitation for me to interview him regarding his thoughts, fears, and experience on our journey to become parents. What have you been doing to prepare for Vivian’s birth? TF: Admittedly, I’ve taken more of a passive role in preparing for our little girl’s arrival. Most preparation duties have consisted of various “honey-do’s” involving the nursery. I have accompanied Autumn to most of her appointments and attended several birth preparation classes, including the Birth Journey, Breastfeeding & Newborn Care, Cloth Diapering 101, and Infant CPR. These classes were new information and… Read More

I’ve been contemplating writing on this subject for some time now. As I near the end of my pregnancy, I have been gifted many more great examples to include on this topic. No, I won’t necessarily be doling out my own advice. Instead, I’ll discuss the deluge of “advice” (typically unsolicited) that friends, family, and strangers alike start to share with women as soon as they announce their pregnancies. I will preface this by saying that I know most of the comments and suggestions are well-intended. Pregnancy & Body Image There is something about seeing a pregnant woman… Read More

As of this writing, I’m almost 38 weeks pregnant! In some ways, it feels like my pregnancy has gone incredibly fast, and in others, it feels like I’ve been pregnant for much longer. With experiencing infertility and loss, we have been on this journey for several years now. But most days I wake up and pinch myself because we are finally HERE! So close to meeting our little girl and it feels completely surreal. We are overjoyed and cannot wait to meet her! Since I prescribe to the notion that due dates are a little more fluid (anytime between… Read More

As my due date is fast approaching, we’ve put the finishing touches on our nursery and it’s finally complete! Early on, many people asked us what the “theme” of the nursery would be. I’m not big into specific themes per se and wanted to keep the room, itself, neutral with pops of color and some feminine touches. I had a photo saved of this beautiful handmade floral mobile from Etsy on my Pinterest board and decided to recreate my own version early on in my pregnancy. That was my first DIY project for her nursery and the “shabby chic”/floral touches… Read More

In my Week 30 post “The Nesting Urge” I mentioned my list of “to do’s” I wanted to accomplish over the next several weeks. I’m happy to report that all the items on that list have been completed! We completed our classes, our birth center bags are waiting by the door, the car seat has been installed, the nursery is complete, and we have a freezer full of meals for the next couple of months. When we took our newborn care class several weeks ago, Lorraine had mentioned a wonderful idea. She suggested getting together with a friend… Read More

This week, my “bumpdate” looks a little bit different than weeks past. While I did take the traditional photo that I’ve been taking all along, I want to share several photos from our maternity session with you. My very talented friend, Cassie, owner of FireRose Photography, graciously offered to take maternity photos as her gift to us. I was delighted at the prospect of capturing this special moment in time and convinced my husband to come along so we could have some photos together. We originally had plans to go to the Arboretum, but with graduation and Mother’s… Read More

One of the many things that I love about Baby+Company are all the wonderful classes, events, and resources that are available to patients and the community. A few weeks ago, I recapped our experience in both the Breastfeeding Basics & Newborn Care class, and this week, I’m sharing my experience with the 4-week ‘The Birth Journey’ birthing class series. Most hospitals either require or highly suggest that parents-to-be enroll in a childbirth class to prepare both mom and her birth partner for what to expect during labor and delivery. Popular classes include Lamaze, the Bradley Method, Hypnobirthing, and perhaps… Read More

As part of our preparation for the arrival of Baby Fleck, I’ve searched the internet far and wide to find a comprehensive list of items that we should bring with us to the birth center. Most of the lists out there are either geared toward a hospital birth or a home birth, so I adapted/created my own tailored for giving birth at a birthing center, with inspiration from Mama Natural’s checklist. Although we may not end up using all the items in the bag, I’ll take comfort in knowing we have them available should we need them. Read More

One of the great offerings from Baby+Company that I’ve been looking forward to experiencing since becoming pregnant have been the educational classes offered during the third trimester. There are a total of three classes that new parents take as part of their care: Breastfeeding Basics, Newborn Care, and The Birth Journey. Due to our crazy schedules, Trevor and I ended up taking Breastfeeding & Newborn Care prior to starting The Birth Journey series (which I promise to share more about in an upcoming post). We were able to take both classes on the same day, which was very convenient. Read More

According to the American Pregnancy Association, “nesting” is the urge to clean and organize. Nesting during pregnancy is the overwhelming desire to get your home ready for your new baby. To be fair, I’ve been nesting for months but this past week I was hit hard by this urge to prep ALL things for baby. Many friends have lamented that they wished they had done more prep prior to the third trimester when they had more energy, so I’ve heeded this advice and tackled projects along the way. Her clothes have been washed and organized for a few months. Read More
