Fuel During Pregnancy: Energy and Mood-boosting Foods

There’s no doubt that pregnancy is a busy and magical time – but it can also be draining and exhausting, both physically and mentally. The right kind of fuel during pregnancy can make all the difference. Here are some foods that can help boost your energy and mood during pregnancy and beyond.

Omega-3 fatty acids are known mood boosters. Try sprinkling some flaxseed on your cereal, or add flaxseed oil to salads (this can also help with constipation!). Walnuts, omega-3 fortified eggs, and salmon are also great sources of these fatty acids.

Oatmeal helps curb blood sugar, which can help with fatigue. It’s also packed with soluble fiber to help with constipation, and B vitamins to help boost your mood. Great fuel during pregnancy!

Cottage cheese provides you with the calcium you need to help build strong bones for both you and baby, and is filled with tryptophan, which can help boost mood.

Lentils are another food packed with fiber, as well as protein. Folate, magnesium, and iron all help with energy levels. A lack of folate has also been associated with depression.

Bananas contain vitamin B6, which helps in producing serotonin, a feel-good brain chemical.

Almonds pack a punch of protein, along with magnesium, which helps produce the brain chemical GABA, which promotes calmness.
